Book to movie: YA novel deserves screen time

It is not uncommon for Hollywood to adapt our favorite books into blockbuster movies. Many of the most well-known movies were based off of books, from Stephen King’s Carrie to Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. More recently young adult books are coming to theaters and it has many readers afraid of a failed adaptation.

2015 has given us some great works of young adult literature; therefore is no surprise that there are already plans to develop some of these works into movies. An intriguing and film-worthy novel of this year is We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach. It follows the story four high school students during the end of the world. The four teenagers, Anita, Peter, Andy and Eliza are all different people connected by the oncoming asteroid, Ardor. The novel is driven by many headstrong and well written characters. There’s slight speculation about a feature film coming from this novel, if it does end up going to theaters these are the actors I would want to star in it.

Beginning with Anita, the African American valedictorian with an ache to live her life rather than the life her parents envisioned for her. She is well spoken and musically inclined which is why the singer/actress Zendaya would be the best equipped actress to play her. In Zendaya’s role on Shake It Up she played a snarky dancer living in New York City. Though her past roles don’t relate to Anita’s character, her personality does. Zendaya was placed on TIME’s 30 Most Influential Teens of 2015 for her displays of body positivity and confidence. During the End of the World party Anita sings in front of hundreds of people with unabashed confidence. It is an emotion that Zendaya would portray perfectly.

Next, there is Andy the skating slacker. When his parents ultimately give up on him, he turns to his thuggish friends. His unexpected romantic endeavors paint another shade to the stereotypical dark, brooding bad boy. Charlie Rowe from Fox’s one season television show Red Band Society would be a solid choice to play Andy. In the show he plays a misunderstood teenager who surprisingly falls in love. Very similar to Andy’s plotline!

Peter is a happy mix of commonplace jock and heart skipping hopeless romantic. Ross Lynch from Disney’s Austin and Ally looks and acts just as Peter would. He is ruggedly handsome with the California blonde hair and lazy smile. It would be interesting to see Lynch broaden his horizons in this movie!

Finally, Eliza is a kind hearted photographer with a bad reputation. After a shocking scandal, she gives up on her image and becomes the girl everyone expects her to be. I think Miley Cyrus would be a good person to play Eliza. They have similar stories and Cyrus is no stranger to bad reputations. In her years on Hannah Montana and her brief stint on the big screen, she proved to be an exceptional actress with very wide range. She would perfectly execute Eliza’s misunderstood and accepting character.

The story takes place in a town that could easily pass as Washington Township or any other big, small town. There are no crazy action scenes or difficult special effects needed to portray the severity of the planets situation. Overall, We All Looked Up flows beautifully on paper and would flow even better on screen.
