Some of people think it’s nerdy to like different types of science fiction or fantasy. With all the slimy aliens, and different types of gore it’s easy to be put off by it. But these genres are becoming quite the craze, especially on television.

Though there is only one SyFy network, many channels are green lighting a lot of science fiction/ fantasy productions, and many of these productions are based off of books.

From ABC Family to MTV, networks are doing something that would have been so much more challenging only a few years ago. With all the special effects, props, make-up, settings, etc  that go into making a science fiction movie, it would be prohibitively expensive to make a television show that was successful, especially if it needed to follow the events of a popluar book series.

One of the first fantasy book series to be turned into a television show was Game of Thrones, and it was a huge risk. There was no precedent set for how to run things with the production and many thought it would fail. But now, the widely popular show is going on to its sixth season. It was a huge success and made HBO a lot of money. In this dog eat cat world, there was no way other networks would not try to join HBO in their success. There are a couple projects in the works that are set to premiere in 2016.

After the movie adaptation failed of Cassandra Clare’s book series The Mortal Instruments, ABC Family decided to try. The book series is about an eighteen year old girls who finds out she comes from a long line of demon hunters called Shadowhunters. The television show itself is going to be called Shadowhunters, and is going to premiere early January 2016.  With over 40 million books sold, the network executives are really hoping this series will be a success.

Cable network MTV will be producing eight new television shows with some set to premiere in 2016. One of those shows is the adaptation of the series The Shannara Chronicles by Terry Brooks. MTV hopes to get a wider audience of viewers by premiering the series. This show centers on people trying to stop an evil army of demons from destroying life.  It is also set to premiere in January 2016.

Trying to keep peace with these interlopers into their genre, the SyFy network, has is the science fiction book called Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke. This series will be about a peaceful alien invasion, and will bring the network back to its roots of science fiction.

Pretty soon it’s going to be 2016. And with the New Year there are going to be plenty of new things, including many new science fiction television productions.
