The Age Of Adaline

What would you do if time just stopped? You were frozen, but time just continued on for everyone else. In the new movie, The Age of Adaline, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) miraculously stops aging after a unique accident. For six decades, Adaline has not aged a single day over 29. She lives her life in constant fear of becoming a test subject, and never truly gives herself the opportunity to live her life. Adaline is blind to what life has to offer until she meets her love interest, Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) and is left to decide if she should let her heart decide her next move.

The movie takes place in the 21st century, yet appeals to numerous generations. Adaline lives under a new identity each decade, and truly adjusts to every time. Whether it’s Adaline’s sophisticated and adjusted demeanor, or the impeccable costumes designed for her in each time period, she blends into every era perfectly. The superior costume designer, Angus Strathie won an Oscar for her style in the famous movie, Moulin Rouge, and clearly did another superb job with this film. Not only are her beautiful styles timeless, but so is this movie.

The writers, J. Mills Goodloe and Salvador Paskowitz wrote this brilliant masterpiece. The movie is truly timeless and is something that will be talked about for years to come. They take you on a mysterious, intriguing, and spiritual journey that demands to be heard. The love story in The Age of Adaline is not only warm, its heart wrenching. One comes to know Adaline’s aged soul, and can almost feel what agonizing choices with which she is faced.

Yet there’s also times where you can’t help but smile when you see her radiating happiness for finally feeling content. The movie gives the audience a modern version of a timeless love. They take simple acts of kindness and transform them into something a bit more magical.

Although this movie excelled in most aspects of the film, it had a major downfall with the musical soundtrack. The director, Lee Toland Krieger hardly incorporated music into the film, and left the audience in a bit of silence. The exciting movie had a dull soundtrack that didn’t match its lively theme. The movie should have played music contemporary to each era. Although the movie was still well written and played, they missed a big opportunity to bring it to the next level. Music definitely would have helped the audience understand the time period better.

Lackluster music does not distract from the quality of the outstanding acting in this movie. Lively recreates the definition of an old soul with her amazing performance. She perfectly fits her character and is both witty and wise, with a very elegant demeanor. Her character is charismatic and attracts nearly everyone in the film. Although Lively was the main character in this story, her fellow actors performed just as well. Huisman and Lively had great on screen chemistry, and sparks practically flew between them throughout the entire movie.

Other big name actors such as Harrison Ford also bring the movie excitement. Ford’s character, William Jones, who is coincidentally is Ellis’s father, leaves people in desperation to find out the story of his past, and what his connection is to the mysterious Adaline is.

All in all, the movie is something that will be remembered for years to come. It hits home with many people, and genuinely moves the audience. I personally enjoyed the film, and would suggest you to give it a shot. It’s got a great plot, good acting, and overall good mood. It would be a great movie to watch with friends or family.
