Senior trip

The start of a student’s senior year is arguably one of the best time of their lives. Powderpuff, Homecoming, Prom, and Senior trip are just a few of the fun activities you get to partake in with your upperclassman status. However, there is one recreation out of all that student’s look forward to the most.

Ever since we were freshman, we have heard about the exciting wonders of senior trip. Friends and siblings would tell us tales of plane rides and theme parks that have us looking forward to a trip with our best friends before we even know who our best friends are. And there is no denying that the trip would be fun and amazing, but what about the people who don’t get to go?

$1500 is a lot of money. It could get you a car, a new computer, or an entire new wardrobe. It’s also the price that it costs to go to Disney World with Washington Township High school. The kids who can afford the cost of this trip get to fly to Florida and experience its theme parks in a way they haven’t before. Those who cannot must continue to go to school. And while the school does have programs in place to help those who need it, it seems that this trip is just a way to buy a week off of school, and those who can’t afford it do not get to participate.

Walking through the empty hallways while everyone is gone almost feels like a punishment. Being forced to sit in empty classrooms with substitute teachers or thrown in the gym with the other seniors not attending the trip hardly seems like the most productive use of our time, however that is how we are forced to spend it. And as seniors we do have the option to leave after fifth period, but once again, it seems pointless to sit for four hours in empty classrooms when we could do that at home.
