A new take on the caped crusader

Animated movies are stereotypically seen as just for kids. These movies have bright colors, kid-friendly humor, and usually don’t directly cover mature themes. Nonetheless, they are still enjoyable, even to older views. The Lego Batman Movie was one of the most enjoyable animated movies I have ever seen.

Batman, voiced by Will Arnett, is portrayed as an arrogant billionaire who loves fame as much as fighting crime. He is also stubborn, and at times, childish. Robin, voiced by Michael Cera, is a lovable orphan who will do anything to be a part of a family. Alfred, voiced by Ralph Fiennes, is never afraid to be tough on Batman, acting as a surrogate father. Zach Galifianakis voices the Joker, who gets into as many hijinks as you would expect.

The animation was unlike anything I have ever seen, even different from the original Lego Movie. The animation was a mix of traditional animation and a computer simulated stop motion style, and each character model was very detailed. The soundtrack, composed by Lorne Balfe, was exciting and fit the action sequences perfectly.

The plot was also surprisingly unique. The plot is more than just the traditional “fight the bad guys.” It dives into the internal conflict that Batman faces. The plot as found a way to incorporate as many characters as possible, which I was not expecting. While the iconic Batman, Robin, and Alfred are still present, this move brought obscure characters from the DC universe to light, some of which I have never heard of, such as Condiment King, Calendar Man, and Crazy Quilt. This movie is also filled with comic book references that any aficionado would enjoy, such as references to the Suicide Squad and Bludhaven.

The Lego Batman Movie was one of the funniest animated movies I have ever seen. Batman takes on a much more humorous role in this adaptation than his usual brooding portrayal. The PG rating keeps jokes geared toward kids, but older moviegoers would still find them funny. There are also many jokes for older viewers that would go over a younger viewer’s head.

This movie was great from start to finish. Well-developed characters, an exciting plot, and lots of humor create a 10/10 experience. If you enjoy comic books or animated movies, this is the movie for you.
