90’s styles make a comeback

Julianna Ford

Has your mom or dad ever showed you a picture of them from a few years ago? You probably overlooked everything about the picture, but what were they wearing? Was the person wearing a choker? Bellbottoms? Maybe even a crop top? That’s what they wore in the 90’s and you’ve probably seem similar styles worn today.

The 90’s style is making a comeback. It’s weird to think your parents were in on this trend even before you. It was all jean, flat hair, berry lips, and chokers back then and you can see those staples worn today, too.

The most common thing you see coming back since the 90’s is chokers. Back then you would see a plain black choker on anyone. Today we’ve amped it up a bit and added different colors with different designs and become more elaborate with our choker trend. You can add one to any look to embrace your inner 90’s grunge. You can spot a choker anywhere, from Forever21 to Francesca’s, there are cheap alternatives to this simple style everywhere.

Another thing you see is crop tops. With high-rise pants cut just underneath your bellybutton and a shirt just above it, a crop top is a staple piece in any 90’s girl wardrobe. Today we wear the same thing. Girls wear it to go out in and even try maneuvering the schools dress codes to wear it in school. You can spot a simple crop top at Forever21 for less than $12.00 or you can go to Express to find more detailed shirts at a more expensive price. Both with fit the trend, though.

Leather jackets, I’ve noticed, are a timeless piece that can be worn all year round. You saw many 90’s girls wearing them including women like Winona Ryder and today we see women like Cara Delevigne wearing leather jackets. It’s an easy touch to any look to make you feel more confident. H&M sells leather jackets at an affordable price and Macy’s.

Lastly a trend that truly embodies the 90’s…scrunchies. You probably had every color and print imaginable in scrunchies if you wear a girl during that time. A 90’s cult favorite tv show was Full House. Almost every female character was wearing a scrunchie during the episode. We’ve seen stars like Selena Gomez wear this trend even on the red carpet. It’s an easy to find staple that you can find at Forever21, American Apparel, or Urban Outfitters.

Next time you go through your closest, check out what pieces you have and which ones you need. Your mom probably even has these looks stored somewhere in her bedroom. I would hesitate to throw out any pieces from today because their “out of style” because there’s a good chance they’ll come back.
