Township Band excited for winter concert
The Washington Township band is putting on a show Wednesday, Jan, 20. This concert will feature music from the symphonic band, jazz band, and a compilation with the eighth graders from Bunker Hill, Chestnut Ridge, and Orchard Valley Middle Schools. The concert will run about an hour and a half, and it’s free, so it should be a way for students to have fun, without freezing outside.
Usually, the band gets their music for the winter concert around the middle of September. This gives the band director, Mr. Casey Corigliano, and band students, plenty of time to fine tune the pieces. However, with the Wizards of Winter concert in early December, students only had a month to work on the four pieces for the winter concert. They had to work extra hard to make sure this concert is a success.
To kick off the show, the jazz band will perform, and play “Night of the Mojito”, “Bills Thrills”, and “Dat Dere”. These jazzy rhythms will impress the audience with their its complicated nature.
“I am pumped up to do this concert. My favorite part is the jazz band segment. This is my first year doing jazz band, so I’m a bit nervous,” said valve trombone player and jazz band member Nick Cottrell ’19.
The symphonic band will perform four pieces during their time on stage. These pieces are Canticum, The Great Locomotive Chase, Sesquehana Overturn, and Air to Band. Air to Band offers a calming, relaxing atmosphere with its long notes and quiet nature. On the contrary, Great Locomotive Chase is fast paced and action packed, with quick notes, loud noises, and even some vocal effects.
“I can’t wait to perform in the winter concert. Great Locomotive Chase is my favorite. There’s just so much going on, and I think the audience will enjoy it,” said Evan Giannini ’17.
Later in the show, the eighth graders will come on stage to preform three pieces, in combination with the symphonic band and wind ensemble. These musical numbers are The Liberty Bell, Heartstrings, and compilation of music from the Star Wars saga. Fan favorites such as the Imperial March and Cantina Band will be played.
“I am excited to play with the 8th graders. I believe I can be a positive influence on them, and hopefully, they enjoy the concert so much, they join band in high school. I’d love to see our band grow,” said Ben Leusner ’17. “Also, how could anyone not be excited to play Star Wars? Band kids dream of this moment.”
“I am eager to perform this concert. The students have been working hard to make this concert the best it can be. I’m also excited to meet the 8th graders for the first time. It should be fun to work with them, and I hope they do band next year,” said Corigliano.
In conclusion, the Winter Concert will be a fun night, with classical music, and new songs that just may become fan favorites. Also, the concert is free. What’s better than free entertainment?
