How soon is too soon?

You didn’t even have a split second to wear your costume or get a sugar high off the pounds of candy you got on Halloween before you were greeted by a “Ho ho ho” or the droning tune of jingle bells. I was at Cherry Hill mall on October 30, one day before actual Halloween Santa’s workshop was set up and ready to go. This past weekend on November 6th kids in the Deptford Mall were already getting their pictures with Santa. I remember seeing my first Christmas themed commercial in late September. In years prior companies seemed to be pushing the envelope by putting Christmas out earlier and earlier, usually a week after Halloween. But this year companies and major retailers seemed to just completely ignore Halloween and start Christmas advertisement by the last week of October. So this raises the age old question; how soon is too soon?

We can all agree the build up to the official Christmas season is agonizing, sometimes we wish it would be Christmas right now in the middle of September but when companies actually start it that early we get tired of the commercials, music and Christmas in its entirety by the end of November and no one wants that. By starting the Christmas season so soon, Christmas just isn’t Christmas anymore, it loses its magic.

Sophomore Haley Murphy said, “I already have Christmas decorations up in my house, so I don’t mind it because I love Christmas, but I hate how everyone’s already buying gifts and rushing to buy gifts now when there is plenty of time”

Like Murphy says there’s already people buying gifts the first week of November it takes the fun out of going out in December when Christmas music is playing and theres snow on the ground. It’s not as fun to go out Christmas shopping when you can go out shopping and you see the Halloween section two aisles over. Also going along with what Murphy said, maybe if people started decorating earlier it wouldn’t be a big deal, that the main problem lies in the fact companies shove commercials in our faces and make us feel pressured to go out and start buying gifts right away.

Somethings are meant to be left untouched and Christmas is one of them. If people wanted to start Christmas early then maybe they should start decorating first and wait for the rush to go shopping and buy all the presents and just enjoy the feeling of Christmas and stop making it about buying gifts.
