Comparing Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota

Nick Georgoulianos

The first two picks in the 2014-2015 NFL draft were quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. These were the two players expected by many to be the first two picks in the draft, but nobody knew who was going to be the number one pick. With the first pick in the draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers chose quarterback Jameis Winston. This was followed up by the Tennessee Titans picking Marcus Mariota with the number two pick.

If you compare the two quarterback’s college stats, Marcus Mariota looks better. Marcus Mariota threw a total of 105 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions during his college career, while Jameis Winston threw a total of 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. In just one more year of college football than Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota had 50 more touchdown passes, while Jameis Winston had twice the amount of interceptions.

Also, if you look at the stats, Marcus Mariota got better throughout his college career, while Jameis Winston had a much better year his first year of college football than he did in his second year of college football. Other stats to recognize are that Marcus Mariota had a slightly higher completion percentage than Jameis Winston, and he had over 4 times as many rushing touchdowns as Jameis Winston.

All in all, I think that Marcus Mariota is the better quarterback. All of his stats are excellent, and he looks like a better quarterback throwing the ball and running it. He has the potential to be a great duel threat quarterback in the NFL. Time to sit back, watch, and see who has the better NFL career.
