In October 2015, Chelsea Collins was named teacher of the year. Collins’ name might ring a bell for certain teachers at WTHS because she is a former graduate.
Collins was more than happy to be reached out to and to answer questions about her experience so far. Collins said she received the news, and was extremely shocked, and honored of course.
Collins believes that the most important factor to being a good teacher has something to do with connecting with a child on more than just an educational level. She said,
“I find that it is first most important to take the time to build relationships with students and get to know them as people. Whether it is chatting about their interests before class, working through homework during lunch or simply attending their basketball games, I let my students know that I care about them and their needs and want to see them be successful in school and in life.”
As far as classroom strategies go, Collins sticks with her belief that interacting with students and having her students interact with other students is the key to helping them be as successful as possible. She said,
“Each day, I offer students various types of instruction: whole group, small group and independent practice. This allows them multiple means of receiving and practicing the information. In addition, I give them choice wherever possible because I find it to be more engaging to them and also it allows them to show mastery according to their individualized interests, needs and learning styles.”
Collins does not easily forget where she came from, which is of course Washington Township. Not so surprisingly, Collins said she carries a lot of her high school experiences with her in her career as a teacher.
“Monthly Rewind helped me to skills that are extremely useful in teaching. Putting together segments takes a lot of practice, planning and preparation, which are skills that are really useful in teaching. Also, it taught me to think through the way that I present information, so that it can be done in a way that will make others interested in the message. I also use a variety of the technical skills of recording and editing videos for my students. I teach them how to use iMovie so that we can complete book trailers and other projects in engaging ways.”
Collins also added that there are many teachers at WTHS that had a lifetime affect and inspiration on her. One of them being Ms. Stockl.
“I would describe her as hardworking, team oriented and a tremendous leader. I am so happy for her, she totally deserves this award. Based on her characteristics as a student athlete here at WTHS, I know that she is an outstanding.” Says Stockl.
Collins feels very honored to be given this award and is very happy about all the opportunities it has given her.
“This opportunity has given me the chance to meet and work with educators across the state, and to experience the great things that are going on in New Jersey’s public schools.”
