Minutemaids Softball Hoping for a Return to Action
With a timetable unknown for a return to the diamond, the Minutemaids softball team has attempted what many of us are doing – staying connected in a time when we must be separated.
Zoom, a popular group meeting platform, has been key to the team’s ability to communicate with each other.
“We’ve all been staying in touch through our group chats and Zoom calls, we all miss each other a lot. I’ve really enjoyed just keeping in touch,” said Peyton Ensign ’20.
Another social media platform that has blown up, TikTok, is another way for the Maids to blow off steam and do something together.
“We did a team TikTok where we passed the ball through the video to each other,” said Marisa Oldrati ’21. (*insert hyperlink in this quote*).
Despite not being able to be on the field, the Minutemaids have been staying active at home through workouts sent by coaches and their own personal training activities.
“I’ve been working on my mechanics for hitting. All the little things that you don’t really work on at practice, I now have down time to focus on,” said Sam Bagosy ’21.
Teammate and captain, Angelina Saverase ’21 said “Every day, I lift weights and run; I also hit and pitch every single day. It makes you almost want to work harder for the future so that you can be better than your opponent. It makes me want to train harder so I can come back even stronger.”
With the NJSIAA’s cancellation of the spring season, the Maids offered their own perspective.
“Especially as a senior, I’m upset about everything but I’m just hoping for the best,” Ensign said.
“Personally, I am feeling sad that we are missing out on our season,” Oldrati added. “We had such high hopes and goals this year. These girls have worked so hard in the offseason and in our preseason. We wanted to do well this year and I know we would have if we gotten the chance to play. I know that with this happening it will only make us stronger when we all get back together again. I just can’t wait to get back on the field with my family.”
The team got together this past weekend, keeping social distancing in mind, and spent time signing softballs. If things don’t resume, they will at least have something to remember a season that could have been.
