Into the Woods

One of Disney’s newest releases has caught many of their viewers off guard. Into The Woods is a mash up between four classic fairytales with a variety of unexpected turn of events.

The main unanticipated surprise was the movies genre. The majority of the audience was expecting only a comical fantasy, yet it turned out to be much more. The movie was not only a musical, but a light opera.

Although the movie hardly had any spoken dialogue, it still managed to portray the stories rather well. The songs themselves were catchy, and mostly easy to understand. Although the movie might’ve gotten a better response from its audience if they had not failed to mention that it was a light opera. It’s hard to believe that the marketers somehow forgot to add that major detail into its extravagant trailers.

Yet the trailers didn’t forget to mention their star cast. The acting in the movie was superb, and the singing was incredible. The movie’s cast featured massive celebrities such as Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, and so many more. Yet they also had new rising stars such as Lilia Crawford and Daniel Huttlestone.

Into The Woods has intertwined four classic fairytales into one, electrifying film. The fairytales included in the movies were Rapunzel, Jack and the BeanStalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella. Yet the biggest story throughout the tale starts off with two bakers. Wanting a child, they became desperate. When a solution to their predicament arisen, the two bakers fled into the woods to find the four items the witch had commanded them to find. Coincidentally, all the characters meet in the woods.

In the beginning of the film the woods is seen as mysterious and slightly dangerous. All of the characters venture out into the woods various times in hopes to get a positive outcome. Although the music remains cheerful throughout the film, the story definitely takes a dark turn.

All of the characters achieve their happy ‘endings’, yet they don’t get to keep them for very long. The middle of the movie is when it seems like everyone’s problems are resolved.

Suddenly death threatening problems come into play when a massive disaster strikes the happy kingdom. Most of the characters lose someone very dear to them, leaving the film with a sense of doom. The end of the film left the audience wondering why they left so many questions unanswered.

Into The Woods left me very underwhelmed, and overall disappointed. I expected a much better resolution to the film. To be completely frank, they killed off some of the original characters off way too fast. I also did not expect practically the whole movie to be sung. Although the music was alright, it didn’t fit in the movies thought out to be profile. If you like musicals, you will most likely like this film. Otherwise, I’d say take the opportunity to see a better movie that fits your needs.
