A Series of Unfortunate Events is a show that can be loved by people of all ages. During the month of January, many new television shows debuted on many different platforms across T.V. One of the many television shows debuting this year is the Netflix original show Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events. The new show is based off of the children’s book series of the same name and stars Neil Patrick Harris.

The show that debuted January 13 is about three children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Bauelaire who are orphaned when their parents are killed in a fire. The children are incredibly smart and each has a unique special gift. Violet, the eldest, is very inventive, Klaus has a talent for information and books, while the youngest, Sunny, has very sharp teeth and loves to chew through things.

The three children inherit their parents fortune that is not accessible until Violet comes of age. They are then sent to live with Count Olaf, who secretly covets their fortune.

The first season of the show has eight episodes that spans the plot of the first four books in the series. The series has a total of thirteen books along with a movie that was released in 2004. Each of the books is broken into two episodes as a part one and a part two. The first book was released in 1999 with the title of The Bad Beginning. The following books are The Reptile Room, The Wide Window, and The Miserable Mill.

Neil Patrick Harris stars in the show as Count Olaf, the hopeful actor who is only talented in his own mind and is willing to do anything to get the Baudelaire fortune. Harris does an exceptional job portraying this character. He wears the many disguises of Count Olaf with witty humor and takes the challenges he can encounter as an actor in stride.

True to its name, the show does contain a series of unfortunate events for the all the characters. The screen writers do a great job of making the plot interesting and making the unrealistic elements come together as a whole to create a new world where the unreal is often more normal than not. Along with that, the show holds a mysterious edge that will have the viewers thinking they have all the answers but in reality only knowing as much as the characters do.

The show is told as events that happen in the past with the narrator being Lemony Snicket. Throughout the eight episodes, there will be a short intermission from the events that are happening in the lives of the Baudelaires where Lemony Snicket provides a little insight or explanation of the events taking place the particular episode. These intermissions are essential to the inner workings of the show because they give insight that the viewers may not know otherwise.

Besides all the interesting aspects of the show, the television show also has valuable lessons to viewers to all ages. The first being that family is important and you should value everyone you have in your life. The Baudelaires lost their parents unexpectedly in a fire while the three children were at the beach. They then go on to live with other family members who die in the conflict between the Baudelaires and Count Olaf. They eventually only have each other to rely on and are dependent on one another to keep each other safe.

The second lesson to learn from this show is that people are more capable than what they think they can do. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny have to rely on each other and themselves to get out of sticky situations. Sometimes the conflict seems insurmountable but the key to getting through the bumps in the road are believing in themselves.

As January comes to a close, it is nice to look back on the many new things that happened during the first month of the new year. There has been rumors but no confirmation of a season two yet, but season one is something everyone should definitely add their watch list. The show is humorous and mysterious with a bit of other things thrown in that everyone will love.
