The Loss of Stars

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynold’s recent passings have shocked the nation, and has left fans grieving over the loss of two massive icons.

On Dec. 27, 2016 the world lost one it’s brightest stars who changed pop culture, and impacted millions of lives over numerous generations. Carrie Fisher, known for her iconic role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars Franchise, died at age 60 after suffering a massive heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles.  Fisher’s death stunned the nation, and fans from all over the world are left grieving over the loss of an icon.

The following day, Fisher’s mother, Debbie Reynolds checked herself into a hospital for reported chest pains. Several hours later, Reynolds, 84, died of a stroke on Dec. 28. The tragic circumstances left the world in shock.

Reynolds was also an iconic star, known for her lead roles in movie classics such as Singin’ in the Rain, and Tammy and the Bachelor. She was a singer, actress, and mother to two children: Carrie and Todd Fisher.

Although Reynolds and Fisher both maintained busy lives in the eyes of the media, the two were practically inseparable. A recent HBO documentary, Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, showcased their unique bond over the course of a year (2014-2015). According to ABC News, the documentary was originally supposed to air on television this March, yet due to the recent passing’s of both stars, they decided to air the special on Jan. 7.

Bright Lights originally debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The film was directed by Fisher Stevens, and Alexis Bloom. In addition, Todd fisher served as a co-producer on the project.

Furthermore, Fisher and Reynolds lived in the same compound directly next door to each other, with a pathway connecting their homes. The two recalled that their close bond shared how they told each other everything. The authenticity of their love radiated off the screen.

In addition, the film showcases home videos, funny secrets, and an overall burst of emotions. The pair were often so in sync that at one point they were caught wearing the same sandals that were in different colors. The intimate bond between the mother and daughter evokes laughter and sorrow various times throughout the movie.

Most importantly, the pair understood each other. They accepted the others faults, and at times even embraced them. Reynold’s was stubborn, and had to have everything perfect before a performance. While Fisher was basically a hot mess, and just went with the flow of things. Reynold’s commented on Fisher’s former substance abuse, and stated that sometimes people need things to get through the day. Although it was evident she was unhappy with her daughter’s problem, she accepted her, and supported her during those difficult times. Their contradicting personalities balanced each other out, and they fit together like two puzzle pieces.

The main focus of the film is the mother and daughter connection of the two icons. The story centered around the fact that Reynold’s needed to retire from show business because of her fragility and old age. The film tracks her final days in the heavy spotlight.

The documentary reveals such a strong bond that it seems that was impossible for the two to live without each other.

Todd Fisher shared with TMZ that Reynold’s last words were,  “I miss her so much. I want to be with Carrie.” That says it all, and hopefully the two are now together again.
